What kind of flowers or plants are easy to keep up in a garden?

I live in Louisiana and I am trying to plant some flowers in the front of my house that look orderly and are easy to keep up. The people that lived here before me have 3 rose bushes and a hibiscus plant that just look to haggard to keep in the front of my small house. I just want something that looks pretty, small, and are easy to keep up. The roses have got to go. Something preferably white but anything will do. Thanks a lot!
